MATA NE PACHEDI - THE KALAMKARI OF GUJRAT

Around 300 years ago when the people of the Vaghri community were barred from entering temples the kalamkari art of Gujarat Mata ne Pachedi was born.

‘Mata ne pachedi’ means behind is the mother goddess. Members of the Chitara family from Ahmedabad, Gujarat are the ones who have been practising this art for generations. Sharing about the art, Artist Dilip chitara says, “around 300 years ago people of Vaghri community were barred from entering the temples. This further led to such a movement that the people of this community decided to create a shrine of their own. A simple cloth was put up on the walls of temple which they started painting in red and black by using sindoor (Kumkum) and coal respectively. The artists began Depicting the story of the Vaghri community and portraying their divine mother goddess, thus began the new art of Mata ne pachedi.
